The more bizarre stuff keeps coming out about Gov. Palin the more befuddled I become about the whole mess. It is inexplicable that the GOP could be so unaware, but maybe they are. Between the ethics thing, the seceding from the Union (they call that Treason where I come from), the falsified family photos, it just gets nuttier with every hour that passes. Tonight Campbell Brown just eviscerated Tucker Bounds trying to get him to answer the simple question of 'please tell me one decision Gov. Palin made as 'commander in chief of the Alaska National Guard?" (and seriously, if it wasn't so scary them calling her that would be hysterical. Actually even though it is scary is is hysterical.)

So my suspicious mind keeps coming around to this. He was going to announce his VP choice the day after the DNC to steel Obama's thunder (which shows him for the nasty SOB that he is) but really, would the obvious choices have done it? I suppose Lieberman might have but I tend to think not. He wanted to appease the right wing and get the press. So he chooses Palin. It's sure to work. About the only person less qualified to be president of the US at this point is Britney Spears. (OK, that was mean and not true. But not too far from not true.) So what's the result? This total shock, tons of press, no one is talking about Obama. Of course it was all not needed because we got Gustav to take the attention. But the end result has to be Palin headed back to Alaska like a rejected Supreme Court Nominee to 'take care of her daughter" and then he gets to choose the VP he actually does want.

Really.

1 - he's got the press
2 - he appeased the religious right
3 - he ends up with the candidate he wants

I wonder if it'll happen that way? I bet it does.

So does that make Bristol Jaimie Lynn? The girl is 7 months along surely they knew before the announcement she was preggers.
It's all just a hot mess at this point.

Here's an interesting Kos diary (http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/9/1/113810/3053/686/582073) entitled Palin-tology: 100 real issues in 1 weekend - ideology over experience, with sources for most of the info.

She's a shocking pick. Regardless what the McCain campaign says about her being thoroughly vetted, there's just no way it's true, imo.

And I just read there's going to be a big story in the NYT (http://www.americablog.com/2008/09/ny-times-on-sarah-palin-vetting.html) regarding the lack of vetting and how McCain just caved in to the religious right. Again.

Representative Gail Phillips, a Republican and former speaker of the State House, said the widespread surprise in Alaska when Ms. Palin was named to the ticket made her wonder how intensively the McCain campaign had vetted her.

“I started calling around and asking, and I have not been able to find one person that was called,” Ms. Phillips said. “I called 30 to 40 people, political leaders, business leaders, community leaders. Not one of them had heard. Alaska is a very small community, we know people all over, but I haven’t found anybody who was asked anything.”

I read somewhere that he wanted Lieberman, but Karl Rove vetoed the idea.

But the end result has to be Palin headed back to Alaska like a rejected Supreme Court Nominee to 'take care of her daughter"

That's what I've been thinking, and I will be surprised if it doesn't play out that way. It still pisses me off, because it seems to be trying to leave the implication of, "Well we tried to get women involved in the upper level of politics but they were too under qualified and embarrassing! That's why we choose the men-folks instead." When meanwhile there are plenty of qualified, intelligent women out there who could competently handle the position and are ignored.

(I promise I'm not a crazy feminist, this sort of sexism just pisses me off. Even if it isn't outright stated by the Republicans, it is strongly implied by Fox News and co. which really isn't right.)

some might call you cynical but, honestly, the whole thing is so bizarre and ridiculous that nothing else seems possible. The republicans can't possibly keep this person as the VP nom, can they? I pray to god with all my heart that this man is NOT elected to run the country.

Interesting theory and you just might be right.

I thought it was great fun that some religious right preacher was asking 'the flock' to pray with him in Denver for there to be a huge rain and mess up the DNC's plans for the open air acceptance of Obama's nomination.

Then Gustav. Karma is a wonderful thing.

This presidential election is starting to sound more like a reality survival show like Big Brother. It's all in the game plan. The problem is that most of America is too smart to buy that crap.

Hey I have been calling it the Harriet Miers' nomination since Saturday. I told my friends to stop laughing because this might come back to bite us in the end.

This is such an incredible story and it keeps building. I'm wondering what will be next for her. I know something will be next.

The point for me is this. I certainly don't want either one of them making my decisions for me. Some of their recent choices don't make sense considering the circumstances. If this is how well the consider issues, we are all up shit creek.
