Just some background, some details and a few thank yous that I wanted to get into my lj.
I conceived the idea after I had done my Bulletin board project. It seemed like a natural flow from that. I asked around for postmarks from my flist but I didn’t tell anyone what I was doing. On the 21st of July I wrote the first postcard and I put it up the next day. At the time I thought that I would have them write about twice a month for a total of maybe 15 posts. I also intended to use only postcards and, in fact, Correspondence to this day resides in a folder called ‘postcards’ in my projects folder. It was very warmly received. Not that many people read my LJ then and it seemed like all of them had something kind to say about Justin’s little postcard to Brian!
All posts were created in Adobe Photoshop. I used a combination of stock photos, my own photos, scans and original art. Very early on I began keeping calendars for both Justin and Brian, so I could keep track of where they were and where they were going to be and when they had last written. I didn’t plan the story out in advance. I had a general idea of some things that were going to happen though. I knew that Brian would go to Europe, that Justin would go to Mexico, that they would meet up at least once during the time Justin was away. Other things flowed from the story itself or from the postmarks that I was sent.
Burnitbackwards sent me a postcard from Yellowstone. That led directly to Brian and Ted going out west together. I had a postcard from the Baltimore Aquarium. I really wanted Brian to go there but I couldn’t think of any reason why he would (other than making them a client, but I had already done that with the MSI.) That is why Gus went to Baltimore, so that I could get Brian to the Aquarium.
Speaking of the MSI, I intended to send Brian to see the trains. But I lucked out and they were having that Toy exhibit. That led to one of the most popular Correspondence entries ever, in which Brian sent Justin a plastic top.
I’m happy that I was able to keep to my goal of having them correspond throughout Justin’s time in California, I kept the tone mostly light, there was very little angst, and it has over all been a happy fic. I’ve enjoyed reading the angst filled S4 fics a lot but I’m glad I was able to offer something a little lighter while still (I hope!) keeping the boys true to character.
I’ve made so many wonderful friends through this project. Many people helped by sending me things and I thank them so much, I truly could not have done it without them. I’d also like to mention my three secret betas (you know who you are!) I didn’t send them posts anywhere near often enough but when I did they helped immeasurably. In closing I’d like to thank everyone who read Correspondence so faithfully for so long. Your kindness and support is the only thing that made it possible for me to create this huge project. Thank you. Thank you for reading, for giving me feedback, for reccing it to your friends, for putting up with my many typos. Thank you.
Details-
The first Correspondence was posted 22 July, 2004. I continued to post new Correspondence daily almost every day after that. Some days I posted twice. I was hit with three hurricanes during that time.
Justin left Pittsburgh on the 18th of August, 2004 and returned for good on the 30th of April, 2005.
Brian’s handwriting – Stylograph
Justin’s handwriting – Sawyer’s Hand
Brian indents, Justin doesn’t. Usually.
There were 155 numbered images, 4 extra Christmas images and one bonus image, for a total of 160 images. 22 July to 25 December is 157 days.
Images took from 30 minutes to 4 hours each to make, not including research and photography.
The working folder for Correspondence is 1.08gig, the completed folder containing just the finished images is 26.5mb.
Anywhere that Justin or Brian went is a real place. The hotels, the flights, the shops, the restaurants are all real places.

You know how much I love this one and how happy I am I could contribute a tiny thing. You're so awesome and nice. I'm not only glad to have read Correspondence because of the art and lovely story, but also because I've gotten to know you because of it.

Correspondence
I discovered this on the afternoon of Dec 20 and I was all caught up by yesterday afternoon (I work on the worlds slowest computer) Figuring out what month you started in and then going through the journal to read each page was a bit of a nightmare but I am so glad I stuck with it and did not chuck the whole computer or try to send you an e-mail beggin you to send me all the entries rather then searching for myself. Specially now that I know how big the file is. Ok now that you have read my problems I gotta tell you that your skills with a computer are unreal I wish I had the abilty to create the stuff your did with this. I guess I will just be happy that you shared it and that I found it so I got the chance to enjoy it as much as I did. Thanks again
Re: Correspondence
I am always amazed to hear that someone has read this huge thing start to finish in a brief perios. It's a nice compliment that you were willing to download this enourmous thing one right after the next!
Thanks for sticking with it :-)

This is the first time that I've commented on this beautiful, incredible, fulfilling piece of fiction.
I was way late in discovering this fic and upon discovering it, I immediately added you to my friends list (if you are uncomfortable with this, please just say so and I will "unfriend" you or you can add me to yours so you can get to know me and my patheic life) so I could read the new correspondences as they were added. I found this, not through LJ, but through What Love Means and I read from number one all the way through to, I think it was, 113 in one night. It was amazing.
I loved the storlyine you created. It was real and believable and you kept both Brian and Justin in character, which is hard to do. The graphics you used were great. And I thought that you handled the time together, when there would be no exchange of letters, exceptionally well, using the journals. Kudos to you on this front. Most authors would have just skipped right over it or not had them get together at all during this fic.
I am in awe of how much time you spent on this. I once wrote a story that took up seven months of my life, and I only posted one chapter a week, and there weren't any graphics or real places involved in mine.
So, I guess what I'm really trying to say is, thank you for sharing your talent, time, energy, and life with all of us.
With awe and respect,
Blue
p.s. the handwriting used for everyone who wrote a letter was great. I especially loved Brian's. It suited him to a tee.

Thank you so much, that really is the best compliment :-)

It's interesting how LJ can influence one's life. When I started reading correspondence I knew quite a bit about computers and many software programs for work and play, but I'd never gotten into pictures or web work. You changed that! The work was so great I bought the programs and played around, and will start a class in January.
It's been a wonderful ride and I can't really think of anything more to say except THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.

That is so nice. I'm really touched by that. Be sure and let me know how you make out with your class. I may be taking a Photoshop class as well. I'm supposed to take multimedia programming but I have an awful feeling it's going to be cancelled. I'm thinking of the the Photoshop one as a backup just in case.

I used to visit your site regularly while LFN was on the air, and was very glad to discover that you had switched to the same fan dom as I had. Keep up the good work!

Oh wow, blast from the past! I swore I wouldn't do the fandom thing again. Oh well, lol.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful project! I was lucky in that I came across this amazing series just about the time I joined the QaF fandom. You were on the 40-ish then. I remembered the thrill and the excitement your work had caused me:) And then I dug up all the previous postings in one go.
This series meant a lot to me. I truly hope S5 would turn your way.
It's Christmas in this side of the planet. I wish you joy, peace, good health and lots of happy memories with family and friends in the years to come. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
*bows again*
