Ok, I think there is enough interest to proceed with starting our own books club. Thus far the following have expressed an interest:

[livejournal.com profile] fansee
[livejournal.com profile] court1429
[livejournal.com profile] beesandbrews
[livejournal.com profile] bodleian
[livejournal.com profile] dean1955
[livejournal.com profile] lemon_lyman
[livejournal.com profile] highd
[livejournal.com profile] tonyans1975
[livejournal.com profile] kaysm95
[livejournal.com profile] joymaro
[livejournal.com profile] rebeccama

Obviously I'm in also and everyone else is welcome.

Here's what I get from the comments:

One book a month
Go with a theme each month to narrow down the choices but we should be flexible in case a new book comes out we all want to read.
Nothing that requires heavy mental slogging, we are not going for intellectual heavyweights here. That does not necessarily exclude the classics but think more Emma and less War and Peace. We here for the fun.

I'm willing to start a comm for it so it doesn't clog up the flists of those not interested. Any suggestions for a name for said comm?

I've come up with some possible choices for themes for each month but please please jump in and suggest others. I am sure I've left something out or chosen a poor order or didn't list your favourite or something. I'm new at this!

September – School related or Children's lit
October – Mystery
November – At The Movies (Books thathave been made into movies or movie/TV tie ins)
December – Holiday
January – Travel or Adventure
February – Romance
March – Irish (Takes place in Ireland, Irish author, etc.)
April – Sci-Fi Fantasy
May – Biography/Memoir (since we're going for light/fun maybe celebrity biography)
June – GLBT
July/August – Epic length Beach books

I haven't got a month that's just general fiction, maybe forget the epic month and have july and august open for anything or drop one of the other themes

So jump on in with ideas and shout out if you want to join. As soon as we have a name I'll start up a comm, we can pimp it out and start choosing the first couple of books.

I like the summer beach book idea. Otherwise, that sounds fun!

I'd love to join, too, but can't promise to be able to participate each month. I still have two semesters left in my master's program and some months I have WAY too much school reading to do...

No problem, it's for fun remember? No one will be taking attendance. Sadly no one will be bringing baked goods or a hot dish either but you can't have everything.

I'll join you if the mood and the chosen book tickles my fancy.

An LJ/fandom book club sounds like fun.

I think so too and I was actually thinking of Fandom Book Group for the name. It's broad enough to include everyone but specific enough to not attract people outside of fandom. Anyone in any fandom will know what it means but most others will not. It's not that they would not be welcome it's just we may have a specific sensibility non fandom types might not have.

It sounds fun, but I hesitate to commit, as my energy varies widely from week to week, even day to day. But I need a push to try some genres that don't usually draw me in - a challenge of sorts. If a dilettante is acceptable, I'm in.

My sister suggested that, she said it doesn't limit you too much but it helps focus the thoughts when there are so many books to choose from.

I love reading so I would like to join your new club. I think it´s a wonderful idea. I don´t know if I can participate each month but I´ll try my best. Will we all read the same book and then talk about it? After we read the whole book or after a chapter? Who´ll choose the book we´ll read? I hope the books you (or whoever) chooses are also available in english in other countries/continents.
Sorry for all the questions maybe you already answered them.
Later, Sunny

Feel free to join in, I am sure many people will have months were they are too busy to read the book. I'm going to post to the group tonight that will answer most of your questions I think but I can tell you will all be reading the book and discussing it, we'll choose books together (more on that later) and since we have members from outside the US we will pick books that everyone has access to or which we can get to those who cannot otherwise get them.

Here's the group:
