I've had my Kindle for a week and I love it. I carry it everywhere I go and I keep discovering new things to do with it. There are tons of free books out there as well as cheap ones plus the ones you get from amazon and other e-book sources. It is also compatible with Audible and other audio book formats. It delivers feeds to me daily and while Amazon charges about $1 a month to subscribe to feeds kindlefeeder does it for free (though they don't send the images).

Here it is with a book on the screen.

If you make our own books you can add covers. This is a collection of TW fanfic. Not the black strap on the corner, that is securing it in the cover.

Here you can see a page in my library. Note the three 'Black Hills' titles. I thought I might want to read the latest Nora Roberts. Many books allow you to download the first chapter for free to sample them. As you can see the top one is marked sample. Then I decided to get it as an audio book from audible instead. The next two are the two parts of the audio book. Audo books are marked with the word audio, as you can see.

This shows how the hinge system latches onto the Kindle. It works very well but I think I'm going to get a new cover that uses four corner straps instead of the hing. I've heard some kindles have had the case crack at the hinge point.

I saved for a long time and then they dropped the price to $299, which put it into my range.

So fab! It's on my list, that's for sure. for your fanfic, did you send it through their converter service? there's no copying from your computer to the Kindle, right?

You can copy from your computer to your Kindle very easily. There's a free software (mobipocket) that does the conversion for you and then you just drag and drop to your kindle. It hooks up to the computer with a USB cable. Mobi takes .txt, .pdf, .doc, .docx and some other formats I think. I've used .pdf and .txt so far.

Amazon's service is also easy and they convert and send to your kindle in less than a minute.

Trying to make another sale for Amazon? *g*

And hey, my Kindle is probably in the right state by now! It should have hit Cincinnati.

Yeah! I track obsessively when I buy toys such as this.

Well I didn't hit Refresh on the recent order page obsessively yesterday evening until it said the package had left the facility. Oh, no, of course not. It must have been someone else doing that. Uh, the cats, yes, they must have gotten at the computer again. Silly cats think it will come sooner if you keep asking (hey, it works with the food bowl, after all).

The cats also informed me just a few minutes ago that the Kindle is at the local UPS hub, waiting to be put on a local delivery truck.

So? Any sign of it yet?

BTW, You can name your Kindle. I haven't yet but am tempted to call it Tosh or Toshiko.

I can't name the Kindle Tosh, because that's my laptop's name. It's a Toshiba, it seemed appropriate.

The Kindle came yesterday between 1 and 4 when I was out of the house, but fortunately the delivery driver knew where to leave it (I left a note on the door). It's WONDERFUL!!!!

I have a trial subscription to the NY Times, by the way, which unless the Sunday edition is horrible I will be continuing. I think I like reading the paper on the Kindle more than either on paper or on the computer. The organization just works with my brain better.

Yeah! Isn't it fun getting new toys? I haven't tried a newspaper yet, have to do that. My laptop is Ianto so Toshiko seemed like it would fit. All the desktops on the network (save one) are named after hobbits. The printers are named for Dwarfs. I started using TW names for mobile devices but I may go another route or back to Tolkien. Elven might be good for mobiles.

All our (the-company-I-work-for's) computers are named after colleges, and all our servers have super-imaginative Serv-108 types of names, so I quietly and quickly named my laptop Tosh when I got it. It's the only Toshiba in a Dell-dominated company, so it fit. Ianto would have been too hard to explain/justify.

I've just started saving for one myself.

Thanks for the ringing endorsement - makes me want to get it NOW! LOL!

It's well worth the time to save for it.

I just ordered it, and I splurged on the one-day shipping (yes, I need instant gratification!).

What software do you use to download word documents? I know you can use Whispersoft(?) from Kindle, but I'm sure there are others.

Mobi Pocket Creator seems to be the main one and that's what I use. Free and very easy.

I looked at one of these a while ago, but I could never figure out if all the e-books I've downloaded to my laptop could be easily transferred to the Kindle. So thank you!!! for answering that question. They are available in Canada right?

I just checked the Amazon Canada store and it is not listed. I know they are working to get it into other countries. The issue is the whispernet service. I guess they need to set up contracts with a wireless company in each country. When you buy a Kindle it includes free wireless 3G service.

I kind of figured once I saw the whispernet connected to Sprint - I'm pretty sure that is a US service only. I guess I'll have to wait. Thanks for the info.
