Sorry, more TW

Change out Gwen for Ianto in that scene. Kill her off. At lease half the fanbase will not even care, Jack will still be devastated, they get to make the point even more clearly that anyone could die. She can have Jack tell Rhys she loves him. Then go on and leave ep 5 (horrific as it was) with Ianto in the Gwen role. She didn't actually do anything other than what he would normally have done anyway. We get to the last five minutes. Jack is still devastated. Ianto gives him his vortex manipulator. Jack heads for the stars.

Tell me you wouldn't watch Season 4 then?

I'd buy a new TV, I'd stock up on popcorn. I'd be counting down the days and watching my DVDs over and over again. I'd be relishing every fanfic, even the bad ones.

Talk about fucking up an opportunity.

Absolutely.

Yep. If anything, the death would hit harder because of all the growth they put on Gwen during the series. And Jack did love her, just not the way he did Ianto.

Finally, I'm breathing again. Hey, they should have called you. Why, oh why, didn't they.

Certainly, I would be much happier now.

I HATE ENDINGS

Honestly? I wouldn't watch it.

Torchwood has always been about the character interactions to me, not plot or even the characters per se. Jack, Ianto, and Gwen trying to integrate new team members? Dramatic (and comedic) potential all around, as they try (and probably fail) to react to the new people as individuals instead of ersatz Toshes and Owens.

Ianto left, again, as the sole survivor? No. First of all, I don't even know how you could write the character. He would have to be either a basket case or Mr. Super-Repression-Man to rebuild Torchwood alone after seeing it destroyed for a second time, after being (almost) the only survivor for a second time.

Second, the character interactions would be greatly reduced. Each of the original five character had a unique relationship with each of the other five, and another different relationship when you have three or more interacting at the same time. (For example, Owen and Tosh act react differently when it's the two of them than if you add in Gwen, Ianto, or Jack, and each of those three changes the dynamic in a slightly different way.) With the "Ianto Show," most of the interaction would change to variants of "Ianto plus Newbie" unless the newbies were well-known secondary characters, which isn't terribly realistic. It could be done, with really good writers, but it wouldn't be easy.

True but it'll be way worse with Gwen. It has to end now since with only Gwen there is no hope because who the hell cares what happens to her? She cares about herself enough. At least with Ianto I'd want to see how he coped and Jack's return etc. Now I could not care less and the very last thing I want to see is Jack back to Torchwood with only Gwen. I'm hoping he never comes back unless they set a reset button on Ianto.

I'm not saying that the "Gwen Show" would be better, just that I'm not interested in either.

i don't think killing gwen in ianto's place would have worked
if ianto had lived, i don't see jack doing what he did afterward, not with ianto there with him
he could send gwen away so he could do the difficult part, but ianto never would have let him

HOWEVER, if ianto had lived the ending could have been SO much different

Of course thanks Quinn that is the ending that Torchwood should have had. The same as Brian in the last episode of QAF heading for the airport or six months down the track Brian and Justin eating breakfast and sharing the morning paper.
