This isn't really about Children of Earth but it is spoilery so behind a cut

You know how all the fanfic writers put a disclaimer on their fics? It usually reads something like "I don't own them, RTD does."

Well he doesn't. RTD doesn't own them. Once he put them out there in the public they became ours. Yours. Mine. His canon is no more valid than yours or mine. He just had more money and technology to tell his storys. I reject his canon. I'll take what I like and throw away the rest. As far as I'm concerned it's no different than reading a poor fanfic or one with themes you don't like and just forgetting. I cried over what he did to Ianto and to Jack but it was just his story and I reject it. As far as I am concerned it didn't happen. I like Johnny and Rhi. I'll keep them. The 456 do not exist. Alice and Stephen do not exist either. Probably. Jack never led 12 children to their doom and he certainly didn't kill his grandson.

Or maybe you like part of that. Maybe Jack had to do that and it broke him and he couldn't handle it. So he took off for the stars. With Ianto by his side.

Or perhaps it was all a dream.

Whatever. Choose your canon. Don't let RTD choose it for you. He's forfeited that right.

So true. There is the technical side with trademarks and copyright and RTD or the BBc or whoever can certainly claim those for themselves. But there is also imagination. What the characters and the storylines do once they enter the brains of the audience. No law and no moaning from the "rightful owners" can control that.

If a writer can't bear the thought of someone else taking their vision and spinning it in a new direction, they should never show it to another pair of eyes. Once it's out there, for all of us to see, it will never just belong to one person again. not truly.

Isn't that beautiful?
