I'd been hearing rumours about this.

AT&T May Have Swayed 'Idol' Results - From the New York Times.

AT&T May Have Swayed ‘Idol’ Results
By EDWARD WYATT

LOS ANGELES — AT&T, one of the biggest corporate sponsors of “American Idol,” might have influenced the outcome of this year’s competition by providing phones for free text-messaging services and lessons in casting blocks of votes at parties organized by fans of Kris Allen, the Arkansas singer who was the winner of the show last week.

Representatives of AT&T, whose mobile phone network is the only one that can be used to cast “American Idol” votes via text message, provided the free text-messaging services at two parties in Arkansas after the final performance episode of “American Idol” last week, according to the company and people at the events.

There appear to have been no similar efforts to provide free texting services to supporters of Adam Lambert, who finished as the runner-up to Mr. Allen.

Since then, angry supporters of Mr. Lambert have flooded online chat boards with messages claiming irregularities in the competition’s voting.

Officials of Fox Broadcasting declined to discuss the situation. In a statement issued Tuesday, a spokesman for AT&T said, “In Arkansas, we were invited to attend the local watch parties organized by the community. A few local employees brought a small number of demo phones with them and provided texting tutorials to those who were interested.”

Details of the voting support were first reported last week in an article in The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

Representatives of AT&T helped fans of Mr. Allen at the two Arkansas events by providing instructions on how to send 10 or more text messages at the press of a single button, known as power texts. Power texts have an exponentially greater effect on voting than do single text messages or calls to the show’s toll-free phone lines. The efforts appear to run afoul of “American Idol” voting rules in two ways. The show broadcasts an on-screen statement at the end of each episode warning that blocks of votes cast using “technical enhancements” that unfairly influence the outcome of voting can be thrown out.

And the show regularly states that text voting is open only to AT&T subscribers and is subject to normal rates.

I posted the text of the article. Rumours had been flying that ten times as many votes were cast from Arkansas as people who live there. Now we find out how they did it.

I'd heard those rumors last week too... and I wouldn't be surprised if that contributed somewhat to Kris' win. Sadly, though, many Kris fans see this issue being raised as sour grapes on the part of Adam fans (which I don't think it is at all -- most of us who love Adam recognize that he and Kris are friends, and this isn't personal) but it's not like they're going to take Kris' title away. I wish there was a way for fans to register officially, and cast ONE vote each week.

If it was personal (for us) then we'd all have been rooting for Adam to come in second, since it's arguably the best spot to be in. At least for someone like Adam who is so freakishly gifted that he's going to have a great career regardless.

Text messaging isn't a normal voting method there? Really? And only one network allows you to do it?? That's insane! We can vote via phone or text every time here. I wonder how much it would change our outcomes if things worked your way.

Meanwhile, AT&T suck.

You can text your votes here but only if you have AT&T and text messaging charges apply. What happened here is AT&T reps went to these parties and brought free phones and free texting and then showed the people at the parties how to send ten text votes at a time. So for every single vote sent by an Adam voter Kris voters would be sending ten. And the Adam fans were paying for their votes. Looks as though it only happened in Arkansas but if that was the margin of victory (and AI is keeping the margin a secret for some odd reason) then Adam would have been the winner had the vote not been tampered with.

Like a lot of people it is inconceivable to me that Kris would beat Adam but I am also quite sure that Adam is happier not to have won. It frees him up for a lot more things than being the winner would have. Without a win Kris would have no career at all so for the two of them it worked out fine.

Last week I was listening to a program on Sirius OutQ and of course the topic was Adam Vs. Kris.

According to them, the gay community didn't support Adam. They supported Kris because the text messages they received said that Kris was more F*#@able....Really....lol

My friend Mike said, "Absolutely." *sigh*

Still, I think the voting rules should always be upheld. Given time to think about this, I just hope Adam busts out and is huge and free of contracts he wouldn't want to honor.

OMG how weird, here in Aus we can call or sms and all phone carriers link in, it sounds like you have to be with one telco only over there. I don't get it, what if you want to ring someone who is not on your carrier can you make the call???? iz very confused and pissed off for you and Adam

AT&T is one of the three major sponsors of the show so they control the texting. You can call from any phone but if you are not on AT&T you can't SMS vote. Which also means there is no interest in fixing the voting issues because it's in the sponsor's best interest to have people voting a lot.

That sounds so wrong because in reality a true vote count did not happen, thanks Quinn
