Dipping my toe just a tiny bit into controversy.

This whole Notre Dame thing. People are up in arms because they invited President Obama to speak at their commencement because he is, to use their phrase, not pro-life.

Presidents Reagan, George H, Clinton, George W. all spoke at Notre Dame and no one said a word, even though none of them were or are pro-life. Wake up Catholics (and I am one) you don't get to choose which life is worth being 'pro' over and which isn't. All of you complaining now who did not speak out when those other presidents were invited are just great big ingnorant hypocrites. So there.

Amen! A number of respected priests have been interviewed and view Obama's presence as an honor because he is the President.

What you said! I, too, was raised Catholic, but I find it ironic that a church with the history that they have (the inquisition, an active role in wiping out indigenous populations in an effort to convert them, burning people who dared disagree with them, contributing to the "troubles" in Ireland, etc.) can even claim to be pro-life.
My opinion and I am entitled to it, so no flames please.

Also completely ignoring the fact that the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES accepted their invitation to speak at their school. That's just choosing to see what they want to see.

Dipping my toe in with you...

Well said. And I completely agree. It's easy to agree with those who agree with you, with those with whom you are of a like mind. It's much more difficult and requires a lot more courage to come to the table (or the podium) with a different opinion and to discuss the matter at hand with kindness, respect and compassion. Arguing is easy; discussing and learning and being respectful is difficult. But I think we all agree that it's the better way to handle split opinions.

I graduated from Notre Dame. Notre Dame invites every president to speak. They usually accept at some point. I am very proud of my alma mater for continuing this tradition even though they knew it would cause controvery. Also, there were very few protests from students. Because really, who is going to object to the President speaking at their commencement.

And another thing, the bishop for the Diocese in Fort Wayne/South Bend is a total gasbag and will do jump over tall buildings to get his name in the press for disagreeing with something that Notre Dame does. Every year I was there he dipped his toe into some perceived controversy.
