As part of my goal of having a cheap but happy Christmas I went to the tree lighting party in town last night. Tons of photos as you might expect but not all that many of the actual lights. Too crowded. I'll go back and get more some night when there isn't a party going on. There were fireworks however. It was a very cold night and I wasn't dressed for it. Since I had the camera set up for the fireworks on a tripod and then they delayed the fireworks I spent way too long standing still in the cold and could hardly walk to my car after!

As someone who lives in a place with four seasons, it always takes me back when I see Christmas decorations and....palm trees! LOL!

I'm getting used to it. It does make it easy to put up lights and things since it's normally good weather.

Those pictures are so beautiful. I continue to be amazed at the artistry of fireworks.

It was about 38-40. Had I been dressed for it it would have been fine but it was warm all day so I only had on a light sweater.

Our high today didn't even reach that! Tomorrow our high temp will be 41.
We have been having very mild weather for a few weeks, so the cold snap was not appreciated.

Thanks so much, it was well worth dragging the tripod along.

The fireworks look amazing. I'm thinking they were probably worth being cold for a while.

The really look great when the fronds are lit too!

Don't palm trees look beautiful when they are decorated for Christmas?

They really do, they are so sculptural.

I gave up my SLR for the ease and portability of a Canon Powershot S80. It is an excellent camera and does have a manual override, but I haven't played with the controls at all. Physical and concommitant mental acuity problems, prevent me from experimenting. Photography has been my hobby since the 1960s, but I haven't evolved any in the past couple decades!
I want to learn PhotoShop Elements (which I bought and installed) and even bought a "Dummies" book, but my powers of concentration and focus have really been fucked (sorry) by pain AND pain meds the past couple years. Or maybe that is a cop out.
Love your photos, please continue to share!

I have a Canon xti digital SLR. Most of these were shot with a standard 18-55 lens. I used a 70-300 for a few. Standard lens for all fireworks, a wide angle would have been good but I don't have one. Both lenses are Canon brand. Everything was shot on a tripod using a cable release since it was such a low light situation.
As for the cop out, it's not. You and I both know the mind has to be fairly clear for creative pursuits and pain does not make for a clear mind!

Wish I had sprung for the digital SLR - thought about the Rebel, which seems to be very popular with amateur photogs. But the size/weight were a detraction, since I am old and feeble now! And I can't remember anything about manual photography any more. Age sucks.
Thanks for sharing the info. "Maybe" someday I will be strong enough again to get back into this hobby in a serious way!
