Some Torchwood Thoughts

In no particular order, mostly (but not entirely) Ianto centric, some about the show itself and some about fanfic, some thoughts. Please feel free to discuss:

  1. Ianto is not shy

  2. Ianto is young but he is not a child or a boy

  3. Coleslaw = Vegetables. Ianto really is very young. Seriously, who would equate ordering cole slaw (with pizza no less) as adding to the veggie content of their diet? Not to mention, what kind of pizza place even sells cole slaw?

  4. Has anyone ever actually called Ianto ‘Yan’?

  5. I like Martha but I don’t want her to take Owen’s place. She’s too smooth and posh. I liked rough around the edges not quite ready for society Owen. Also, I can’t picture Martha hanging out the window of the SUV shooting at a blowfish.

  6. And speaking of blowfish, how is it that the blowfish is not in any known database (KKBB) when it was clearly known to Victorian Torchwood?

  7. In fics, why so many Hob Nobs? And ice cream? We see Rhys having ice cream at the end of Meat but other than that I don’t recall them going for ice cream. And why are they always eating Hob Nobs in fanfic? Have we ever actually seen any of them eat Hob Nobs? There’s nothing wrong with Hob Nobs, I eat them all the time. But why are they so ubiquitous in fanfic?

  8. Jack didn’t know he couldn’t die when he woke up on the Game Station but the doctor did when he left him. That somehow makes it all that much worse. If you’re a Torchwood fan and never seen the scene between Ten and Jack in Utopia where Jack asks him about being left behind and what happened and why can’t he die, then you’re missing a treat. David Tennant and John Barrowman are perfect in that scene.

  9. Ianto is neither anorexic nor fat.

  10. There has never been anything to indicate that Ianto is just a sex toy.

  11. Ianto is not ashamed. OMG, fics that have Ianto as ashamed in some way of his sexuality or his intelligence or his skills drive me batty.

  12. What is it with the begging and the blackmail in this fandom? Comment or I won’t write any more? Give me a break.

  13. Someone once wrote in a fic (sorry, can’t recall who or what fic) that everyone has their phobias and that Ianto probably doesn’t like open flame, given Canary Wharf. That was very insightful and it made me realize that since we had a fire in our house at 4am a year and a half ago there has not been so much as a lit candle in my house. Even the fake fire on Pirates of the Caribbean at Disney World freaks me out.

  14. I bet Jack uses a straight razor.

  15. I love seeing Ianto drinking whiskey in Jack’s office.

  16. I’m going to adopt Ianto’s napkin tucked in the collar look soon if I don’t stop dripping things on myself. I don’t care that it will not look adorkable on me, just stupid.

I have like NO time to comment on this (at an apple store figuring out something techy) but just... yes. To all of it. Yes.

[identity profile] joesther.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
OK, so I'm done there but I'm sitting outside stealing their internet and I wanted to make a more substantial comment. So.

1) He's not shy, but he is reserved, and sometimes people get those two things confused. Those, and snobby, but he's clearly not snobby.

2) No, not a child nor a boy. But in this, I think people compare him to Jack who's clearly older, plus with all his time travel, way older.

4) I think some people might have called him Yan just because they've nearly whispered the "to". So it was inadvertent. Otherwise, no.

5) I love Martha but I'm still unsure as to how I'd feel if she were going to join the TW team full time. I think she's better as a guest star. Plus, she lives in London and TW's in Cardiff. Horribly long commute, considering her fiance/hubby.

6) Typical TW inconsistency. Slap it on the pile. :)

7) Because in fanfic, people take one little thing and expand on it to ridiculous proportions. It happened in QAF; it's happening in TW/DW.

8) Love that scene. Love it.

9) Ianto is perfect. Nuff said. :D

10) No. But it definitely says a lot about fandom's projection issues. :)) :)) :))

11) Again. Projection. :D

12) Immaturity in fans? This one has me stumped.

13) Understandable. And like you said, very insightful.

14) Mmm... yep. *brain wanders off into dreamworld...*

15) Brain still in dreamworld...

16) I want a photo if you do that. Srsly. :)

OK, done now. :D

Oh hell no.
beccaelizabeth: animated: bunny bunny bunny bunny BUNNY BUNNY BUNNY + Zatanna trying to keep one in the magician hat. Too many bunnies! (bunnies are winning)

from just this one question I has sudden plot bunny where Jack works for Torchwood specifically to run a sort of underground railroad to get relatively harmless aliens away without them being dissected. He fakes up paperwork and disappears files, just like he did with his own files.

Go for it! I'll just sit over here and wait for you to post it.

Since I already did the list thing on Grey's Anatomy, I will just say I agree 100%.

[identity profile] manekikoneko.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
1. YES. Introverted, quiet, but not shy.
2. Yes.
3. I thought he was joking.
4. Yeah, the sort of fics that do have people calling him "Yan" are the kind I generally stop reading in the first paragraph.
5. A good point, and I mostly agree. I feel like I'm being forced to accept the idea of Martha joining the team, but I'd really rather watch them find and recruit brand new people to Torchwood.
6. I have an idea about this (and something of a plotbunny). For one, it didn't seem like old Torchwood was big on keeping records on things that weren't useful to them. But also, if there were records, they would have included Jack's involvement, and I suspect Jack cleaned himself out of the Torchwood records, lest any of his new team learn his secret before he wanted them to. Surely if there was anything mentioning Jack in the historical records of Torchwood Cardiff or London, Ianto would have keened onto something.
7. They're iconic? I'm guessing the writers are either American or considering American audiences, and think that making reference to different kinds of biscuits would be confusing.
8. Yes.:'(
9. YES.
10. YES!
11. WTF?
12. That happens in every fandom. I suspect the writers of being young.
13. Interesting. Doesn't one of the upcoming books deal with phobias?
14. Oh hells yes! I've actually been trying to write a shaving fic, given that shaving with a straight razor is really curiously sexy.
15. Yup. :D
16. Teehee.

I used to date a guy who used a straight razor and it was very sexy and also resulted in a an incredibly close shave.

I obviously read very little fanfic in this fandom, since a lot of your points had me thinking: people see that on screen? Weird.

To be honest, I don't mind deliberate ooc-ness most of the time. If done well, it can give you another perspective on seemingly well known characters. But when someone strong is written as weak or an oblivious and slightly dumb character as secretly smart and the author sees nothing wrong with that, I hit the backspacing key.

Shahar

Yup, my thoughts exactly.

In fics, why so many Hob Nobs?

This is hilarious, because I'm reading the Torchwood novel Trace Memory right now. In the book, Ianto's old boss at Canary Wharf talks about offering Hobnobs to a guest from TW3 when he arrives. Snippet (not plot spoilery):

"I'm here to see Bev Stanley," said the old man. "I'm Mr Cromwell, from Torchwood Three."

Ianto frowned.

"Cardiff," the old man said abruptly.

"Oh, of course," said Ianto. "Um...If you'd just like to take a seat...Can I get you anything? Tea? Bisquits? We've got Hobnobs." He closed his eyes and wondered whether he was blushing. Had he really just asked the old man if he'd like a Hobnob?

In agreement with the rest of your comments!

ETA: There was a quote somewhere from either John Barrowman or Gareth David-Lloyd that Jack does not shave because 51st century men do not have facial hair! Therefore John must close-shave while filming.

[identity profile] manekikoneko.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
I remember this quote's existence, which sounded like a John joking/griping about Jack's always being clean shaven. (On the Captain's Log feature on the S1 box set, he and Burn share some laments about how HD is an actor's worst nightmare, so I imagine he has to shave quite close.) Since they upset the idea of 51st century men lacking facial hair when they gave Victorian Jack sideburns, I've developed my own theory that, just as Jack ages very very slowly, so his hair grows really really slowly, and it took him years to grow those sideburns. XD

I remember that now, it was in one of the captain's video blogs.

I agree completely agree with 1, 2, and 11.

And I don't know what is with the fics that depict Ianto as kind of a helpless mass of boy who doesn't know wtf he's doing and who relies hopelessly on Jack. I'm of the sound opinion that Ianto has a pretty steady hold of himself, especially in series 2.

Yes! I think people latched onto PTSD Ianto from Cyberwoman and Countrycide without looking any further. It took a seriously brave, resourceful and intelligent person to pull off getting and keeping Lisa into Torchwood and his actions in Countrycide probably saved Tosh's life.

If I see one more, "Give me feedback" I'm going to explode..seriously people, shamelessly asking for feedback means I WON'T READ IT.

And then what kills me, when someone reviews an episode and they have to leave an entry on a comm saying they did it, so you'll go over there and leave what..feedback.

It pisses me off..almost as much as when I read that Ianto is fat or that Jack is totally psychologically or emotionally abusing him in their relationship.

Oh yeah, because Ianto is totally a doormat. What show are they watching?

[identity profile] frooshoo.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
They make me nutsy, it's like, they are just having fun right now Ianto even said that he's helping him live again, I'm not expecting any more than that fun, and while we get glimpses that it runs deeper, I'm fine with the way it is right now.

They got all pissy because it wasn't moving fast enough.

That's what caused me to take a walk down memory lane..and basically tell them they don't know how freakin' lucky they have it!!

Ianto is a consenting adult, if he had any problems with Jack, he'd break it off, and Jack wouldn't pursue him either.

Me too, and so is Ianto from all I see. I mean, we've seen him go to his 'happy place' a couple of times when thinking about Jack and it's hilarious and he looks happy. Meat? When Tosh says they are sad and lonely and Ianto smirks? He doesn't look even a tiny bit sad there. Or when he was talking to Martha and wandered off in his mind for a minute there? NOT SAD.

[identity profile] frooshoo.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely, I think in a way they both are just having fun, and from some of the tenderness on Jack's part, I think he likes almost taking care of him in a way..and I truly think he has feelings for Ianto, even though there are those in the fandom that paint Jack, and this pissed me off--as just an intergalactic space whore who couldn't have any feelings for Ianto whatsoever.

See what I mean about why some of them make me nutsy..and that comment was what put me over the edge with telling them about how lucky they have it.
