Mom update
It's been a very long day. Things went fairly well today. The Dr. was unable to solve the problem but he was able to get access to the duct and insert a stent as a temporary measure. Since my mom's anatomy is so very different fro the standard following previous surgery the tools that are designed for a standard anatomy wouldn't work. He's ordering special ones and will have another go at it in a month or two. In the meanwhile the stent should provide her some relief from the pain and medication may dissolve some of the stones in the duct.
So he wasn't able to complete the procedure but he was able to get more done than he feared and was able to map out a plan for the follow-up procedure down the road.
Thanks for all your kind thoughts, they are greatly appreciated.

The operation
The outcome wasn't unexpected but is nevertheless disappointing. The stent IS good news, and I hope it does bring your mother relief. The problem with pain killers is that, although they may ameliorate the pain, they often have undesirable side effects. So if she can be kept comfortable with less medication, that's all to the good. I do hope the meds will work on at least some of the stones.
Will your mother be able to go home until the second surgery?
My father was a urologic surgeon. Someday, when I have diarrhea of the fingers, I'll tell you about my brother and the Mason jar in the bathroom, if you'd like. FanSee
