A Couple of Things

I've recently acquired a fascination with Bento. Anyone else on my flist do this? I decided that this week I'm going to try and do Bento every day for lunch. Of course I will never make anything that

but one can aspire. I bought enough stuff today so that if I do some pre-cooking tomorrow I ought to be able to have a healthful, attractive lunch every day this week.

Also, I love this scene (which only lasted a few seconds) from Greeks Bearing Gifts. I've only ever seen it referenced once in a fic but I find it really intriguing that Ianto is debriefing Tosh. Clearly Gwen and Owen couldn't do it, given the circumstances but it's interesting Ianto was given the task. Also, note the table, there are coffee cups at each place, there must have been a group meeting before the others left and Ianto conducted the debrief.

I have never heard of Bento before and there is nothing on earth that would make me want to actually spend the time creating that tableaux, but omg, it is soooo cute!

They aren't all cute like that but they're arranged nicely to make an attractive appearance. The last couple of weeks I've been eating junk for lunch because I'm so sick of lean cuisine. I have to get control over lunch and start eating healthy again. I'm so tired in the afternoons and I know it's because of what I'm eating for lunch.

As I was led to understand it, such bento are made for children by mothers who clearly get up way too early in the morning. Japan has some weird social expectations.

I like that bit from Greeks, too. It's actually in something I'm writing right now, and Ianto gets the job because Jack has just sent Mary to her death, so he figures Tosh might need someone more sympathetic to talk to for a while.

Oh excellent! Can't wait to read it.

Yeah, frozen lunches can only get you so far. I just google pics'd for bento. That's amazing! Hello Kitty is sure popular. I just saw a tomato lobster and two sardines wearing red pepper high heels. take photos of your bentos and show us what you come up with. ;)

I can say with total assurance that there will not be any lobsters or sardines wearing high heels.

I find it easier if I prepare the bento the night before. It helps with portion control.

Hee! I love Bento - I'm a teacher in England and when we do our unit on Japan, we go over what a bento is and i am hoping to make them with the kids in the summer. You should check out http://www.bentobusiness.co.uk/ - they have lots of neat recipes and many of them can be easily adapted to low-cal or other diet. And they have some examples of boxes that are a bit easier to strive for - not wuite so elaborate! If only i have to time to do this kind of thing. Maybe I should look into trying for a week and seeing how that goes. Hmmmm....

Your skills never cease to amaze me! I've been trying my had at bento, but have yet to achieve anything remotely cute as that. Will you be posting more?

ETA: Can you tell me what's in it?

[identity profile] quinn222.livejournal.com 2008-04-20 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Oh good Lord I didn't make that, I posted it as an example of something way beyond my skill! It's really adorable though isn't it?

Yes it is. There are several LJ bento comms, and a few blogs.
I like I love bento! and finally there's a reasonable online store called Ichiban Kan that recently opened.

That bento is beautiful. One guy I went to school with always had nice lunchboxes. Nothing like this, but his mother would cut the sandwiches in small squares, add small fruit, a bit of cucumber, those tiny tomatoes and before christmas homemade datesweets. he once explained to us, how she had everything prepared, put out four boxes in the mornings (big family) and add everything in the same order to all of them. Bit like they do at fast food places. ;o) I always thought it was a good way to make healthy meals more exciting.

The scene above somehow went past me until now, but I haven't seen all the episodes more than once or twice yet. It does make sense though. Ianto was the least involved into what happened during the episode. He didn't have a secret, that hurt Tosh, he didn't sentence her lover to death. Also he is quite good at molding himself to what the person he is dealing with wants/needs at the moment. So it was probably easier for her to be debriefed by hi.

I think that's really sweet, that she'd take the time and care to do that for her family. It's not something anyone really has time for so you have to carve out the time.

I work for a company that's owned by a large Japanese corporation, they bring me back new bento boxes if I ask for them when they go..and on the trains there, that's all they basically serve.

But I doubt they look like that. *smile*

And I love that scene too, I made a ton of caps from the second season, not so much the first one, but that scene was a great one and it showed that Ianto was more a part of the team than they showed a lot of the time. You really had to feel for Tosh, she had the worst taste, in a way it was actually kind of more realistic to have a character like that, but at the same time it was like, "Can someone please give this woman a break?" And what she heard Ianto thinking broke my heart.

Lucky you!

So true, she never did catch a break. What got to me about Ianto (and I'll admit I adore him and think GDL's performance is consistently brilliant) is that the others telegraphed to a degree what they were thinking. Ianto had that serene outward calm while his inner thoughts seethed and you could see it just about broke her.
