The space shuttle is about to launch. Guess I should go outside and look up. One of those Florida things.

So cool that you can do that. Wish I could.

Went out and looked also. I do everytime they launch. I especially like the evening or night launches as you can see better. Mosquitos were bad, but at least the love bugs are gone.

The night ones are the prettiest. I saw a night one last year while at Epcot and that was great, it was right before the fireworks so tons of tourists who'd never had a chance to see one got to see it.

I'm of the generation where we watched every space launch in school. We knew all the astronauts names. I've always wanted to see one in person.

So did we - and when I was eight years old I watched the Challenger disaster on TV at school. I clearly remember a lot of what happened, even now. It was quite a traumatic time for all of us in the classroom. I remember that our teacher was very upset by what had happened and was also trying to calm everyone down. I think she was especially interested in watching because of the first teacher going into space.

That is one of the saddest moments I won't soon forget.

Now that I've lived in Florida for almost two years I NEED to start watching for news on when the launches are going to happen. I saw one a few months back and would've loved to see it happen again. I found the Launch Schedule (http://www.nasa.gov/missions/highlights/schedule.html) on nasa's site so I know for next time!

Did you see it?

Did you see it?

Yup, walked out my front door and looked up and there it was. Make sure you catch the next one!

Wow I'll bet that's a wonderful site. I live in the northeast and have
never seen a launch. How close do you need to be to get a good view of
the launch?

Not very. You can see it from miles and miles away. I'm about 90 minutes south of the cape and I've also seen it from Orlando.

We watched it from the front driveway as I was out watering and deadheading the rose bushes on that side of the house. I still hold my breath until about 2 minutes have passed and they've dropped the solid rocket boosters. It was a beautiful clear evening for a launch and we heard a low roar about 4 minutes later as the sound wave gradually hit us.

I have friends who've gone out there and they say it's beautiful when they do a evening or night launch as the whole area just lights up but the noise is unbelievable.

It was a pretty one this time with the setting sun lighting up the smoke trail. I'm like you, I'm always happy to see those solid rocket boosters be ejected.
