Extreme Makeover

I'm recently fascinated by this show but I have a question. They show these people getting the news that they are getting a makeover and they are so shocked and surprised! But...why do they think the camera crew is hanging out at their house/place of work/party at bar etc?

The families know that they're in the running. They have to have a group of 3 to 5 families as finalists so the crew can go to the town, contact local businessess and people to help. Local businesses end up doing a lot of the work. Paving, roofing, glass companies etc. so they have to do a lot of leg work first. So the family isn't sure, but they do have an idea.

I was a volunteer when they were in MA last year. It was an amazing experience to work on it!

This is the one where they makeover a person. I guess they do it the same way as the houses though.
