Day Two:

The insurance company sent Serve-Pro to the house yesterday. They arrived at 11:00am. The fire occured between 4-4:30AM. I'd say that was good service. They took photos and cleaned up the ash and glass (but didn't toally clean) and set up dehumidifers and air scrubbers. We have to keep those running until they come back on Monday. My parents are settled into a hotel and my uncle and stayed in the house, since our rooms are on the other side of the house. Dandy has been sticking to me like glue. I had to sleep on the other side of the bed last night because he was plastered to my side and wasn't going to move. He weighs ten pounds. I could have moved him but clearly he wanted to be in that spot so fine with me.

I'm going to take my dad on some errands to day. He has to replace his cell phone. His get wet since it was on the bedside table. I spoke to both of my brothers yesterday and they both called my parents. One of them was so angry that he didn't even want to talk to my dad. He was afraid what he'd say. My father pulled the cigarettes/oxygen thing in his house once too. My brother told him he had a choice, no smoking or a hotel. My dad chose the hotel.

I'm buying fire extinguishers today. We didn't have any in the house. It's a bit closing the barn door after the horse escaped but whatever.

Oh, and yesterday my boss sent someone from work to come and check to see if we were ok and if we needed anything. I've been offered everything from cake to a drinking binge to a shoulder to a bed. I love my friends and co-workers.

I'm so glad you have so much support. It's good that Dandy has you and feels safe with you.

I am glad everyone has been so supportive. I hope this convinces your father not to smoke in the house. I would think the fear alone would be a deterent.

I'm glad things seem to be going as smoothly as possible under the circumstances. It's great that you have the support of your coworkers. We had a fire at our place of business about ten years ago and the cleanup and aftermath was a nightmare. The choir I was in at the time took turns bringing us 'ready-made, home-cooked' dinners for a whole month. It was overwhelming but very much appreciated since all of our time was being spent farming out work to other printers and trying to find a new building to set up shop in. It's sad that sometimes it takes a difficult situation to see know who you can really count on, but on the other hand, it's always good to learn that there's someone in your corner.

Fire extinguishers are a great idea and not necessarily a case of closing the barn door lol. Always better to be safe than sorry, in my opinion.

Poor Dandy, but at least he seems to feel secure at your side, so that's got to be a good feeling for you.

I hope your dad takes a second look at smoking in the house. I know it's hard, though, to change lifetime habits. I'll be keeping a good thought.

I hope the remainder of the aftermath is as painless and as hassle-free as possible. Please keep us informed and let us know if there's anything at all we can do. Contribute to a cell-phone/fire extinguisher fund... anything. :)

So glad you have support from your coworkers, etc. I need to buy fire extinguishers, too. Thanks for that reminder.

I'm glad Dandy was with you the other night. I could immediately get my dogs out the door in an emergency, but the cats? They've got so many hideouts I wouldn't even know where to look first.

Maybe you'll be able to convince your dad to step outside to smoke from now on. Nicotine is a powerful, powerful drug. :((

You guys are so very lucky no one was hurt.

Hope this is a wake-up call for your dad. Really.

Poor kitty! It's bad to be totally freaked out!

My grandfather was on oxygen and smoked so I understand the frustration. I'm glad you have a lot of support around you. Poor Dandy. I'm sure he's channeling a lot of the confusion going on around him. They say animals feed off of our emotions - I believe this to be true. You're his security blanket right now.

I'm buying fire extinguishers today.
I'm glad you're doing this and buying more than one. I know people who either only have one or none at all. I have two in my tiny house.

So very glad you're all safe. Hang in there my friend. :)

You are the alpha cat so naturally he's your baby right now.

I am so very glad I never started smoking. I cannot imagine not being able (or in the case of some of my friends, not wanting to give it up).

What wonderful, wonderful co-workers!

Oh Quinn, I got the chills reading about your fire. What a harrowing experience to go through. I am so happy everyone and Dandy are OK. It's great that all your friends and family are so supportive.
