Churchill Downs had a huge card that you could sign during the first week of the spring meet. They sent it to the Kentucky Derby winner. It was awesome what people wrote and signed.
The horse is Barbaro, he won the Kentucky Derby in May and was favored to win the Triple Crown. As you can see he's a beautiful horse and by all accounts also goofy and playful. Two weeks later in the Preakness Stakes he shattered his back leg. He was rushed to the Penn Veterinary School, which has one of the leading surgical teams in the country for treating large animals. They operated for many hours and screwed the bones back together. He's still in critical condition but doing very well.
Edgar Prado was his jockey and is credited by many with saving his life. He was able to pull the horse up very very quickly and keep him calm until help arrived on the track.
I'm glad to see he's doing so well. He's so mellow though that I'm wondering if he's a gelding in disguise..LOL..aren't stallions supposed to be a lot more domineering and agressive? This big boy seems like he just wants to hang out and have fun, I swear he's smiling in this pic.
