About the windows...? What about glass panels similar to the loft for Gus's bedroom? That way he can open them when he is young so that the room seems to flow with the living area and he can interact with his dads, or close them for sound reduction and sleep. They would be frosted so that adds to privacy as he gets older.

To be honest though, I guess that you have this sorted in your own mind anyway (grin) but I just thought I'd throw in my two cents :-)
