I've mentioned my dad before. Some of you may recall that he is very high maintenance. Very. He's the type who would stand in front of the refrigerator and ask you to get him a glass of juice out of it. He'll w ait around until someone else is making themselves breakfast or lunch and then say, "Oh, make me one while you're at it." There is a point to my telling you this. He has an interest in model railroads. He's never done much with it but he reads the magazines etc. He builds the real thing for a living. Or at least that's one of the things they build. In any case there was an open house at the local Model Railroad association this weekend. I offered to drive him to it. Thinking both that he'd enjoy it and that maybe he could get involved and it would give him something to do besides sit around smoking and driving my mother slowly insane. So yesterday we went. It was really interesting. They had a huge layout and everything. I'm standing there checking it out when I hear my dad behind me telling this guy, "My daughter is really interested in getting involved in the hobby..." OMG. He wants me to do his hobby for him. He even offered to pay the $200 membership as my Christmas present. WTF. Um. No.

Today I was on call. It was fairly quiet so I got my Christmas trees put up and the lights put on them (no ornaments yet) and the lighted garlands hung on my picket fence. Oh and the garlands put on the chandelier. It was a productive day. Back to work tomorrow. The following week I have Thursday and Friday off (Disney!), then I have the week after Christmas off, when I think I'm having houseguests.

Is anyone else addicted to Podcasts? I am so far behind listening to them I think I need to take a cross country road trip.

OMG yes, I'm addicted to Podcasts. I have one in particular that I'm totally behind on, and I try to catch up, but every time I think I finally have time to listen, they update and I'm behind again. Good to know I'm not the only one this happens to.

And as to your dad, all I can say is oy.

I empathize with your Dad situation. Mine has a thing where he wants something from you, but he won't ask for it or make the first move; he waits for you to figure it out from his body language or indirect hints, or from psychic powers. Whenever it starts really irritating me (like when I get home from work and my psychic abilities are at an all-time low) I remind myself how much I'll miss him when he's gone. :)

I've listened to some podcasts, but mostly I am an Audible audiobook junkie. It's nice to "read" a bestseller and be able to rest your eyes when you stare at PC monitors for hours a day.

I like the idea of them but I got one to listen to in the car. It's divided into sections that are 2 hours long and you can't fast forward to the middle on an iPod. My commute is only 30 minutes. It didn't work out too well.

not to sound goofy, but what exactly are podcasts? i've seen them advertised on tv, but i've never investigated to find out anything about them.

I'm not sure how to describe them because there are so many different ones. Here are a few I subscribe to:
NPR - Story of the Day
NPR - Books
Ebert and Roper movie reviews
The Lost Podcast (features cast and crew talking about each episode)
The Sims Podcast
PBS put out a series of casts about Einstein

I love them, that's only a few of the ones I subscribe to. You don't have to have an iPod, if you have iTunes you can listen (and in some cases watch them) on your computer.

do you have to pay anything? still not sure what they are, guess i need to quit being so lazy and go find out!! LOL

They're free and they are basically like a radio show that's been recorded. You can subscribe and iTunes will automatically update them whenever you launch the program. They have them on every topic you can think of. Some of them are really good, other not so much. But since they're free you can try them out and find the ones that really interest you. I love listening to them on my commute.

In this house I do two. One in the living room and one in the dining room. I'm lobbying for one on the porch but I don't think it's going to fly this year.

Bwaahahaa, your dad wants you to do his hobbies for him. Sorry to laugh, but that is just too funny.

Once you're done with your trees, you will post pics of them will you? The ones you had last year were so gorgeous.

Sure, but they'll look pretty much the same. I don't go out on a limb much with Christmas!

OMG!!! You just described my husband to a T. He builds all kinds of trains, all sizes. I have one in my basement the size of a Mini-Cooper. I have so many models trains in my basement I keep telling him when he dies I will have to sell the trains and the house will go with it because there is NO way I could possibly move them.

As for those trains shows, Hon, be afraid! Be very afraid!!!!

I wouldn't mind that (except that this is FL and we have no basements.) It's the idea that I'm supposed to do it for him that kills me.

I have spent most of my life planning vacations around train shows. I don't go with him to those any more but I do still like the excursions on the real steam engines.

After my husband retired from teaching in the New York City schools a year ago he became a conductor on the CSX Freight Rail Road. Now he gets to play with the real thing. It must be genetic also because my son is a conductor on the New York City Subways and my other son works for the Transit Workers Union.
