I read A Son Called Gabriel by Damian McNicholl yesterday and highly recommend it. It's beautifully written. One of the blurbs on the back cover reads "will break your heart and make you laugh." and that's totally true. It's about a young boy growing up in Northern Ireland in the 60's and 70's. It's written from Gabriel's POV and the author has the child's voice down pat. Some of both the funniest and saddest moments come from Gabriel's reactions to the things adults around him say or do but which go right over his head.
