Oil

posted by [personal profile] quinn222 at 07:41am on 01/09/2005
I almost never post about politics in my LJ. Mostly because it's a subject that makes me so angry it wrecks my day.

That said. Run now. I am about to rant.

Yesterday some flunky from the Bush administration was on TV being asked about gas prices and was the govt. going to do anything about it. His answer was pretty much along the lines of, "Of course not." though he offered the suggestion that anyone who thought a gas station was gouging should report it to their Atty. General.

Really.

I was pissed that the reporter didn't call him on it and point out that pretty much no one thinks they are being gouged by the local gas station. We're being gouged by the oil companies. AKA: The Bush Administration.

If profits had held steady while prices were going up I'd be fine with that. But they aren't. Profits are going up astronomically. It doesn't take an economic genius to figure out that therefor price increases were not necessary and still aren't. So why isn't the government stepping in and putting a stop to it? Gee, I can't imagine why not. I hope all those idiots who voted republican because then they'd have lower taxes are happy. You don't have lower taxes and now you're paying three times as much for gas and heating fuel and the price of everything that moves by truck, train or boat (in other words, everything you buy) is also going to go up. And if you voted for Bush for moral reasons, well, you win. Assuming you meant to vote for an amoral despot.

It is time people begin to SHOUT.....past time actually.

If you spoke up today, someone else will speak up. Many voices will be heard and occasionally can change things.

We could be in for it this time. The tide needs to change.

You expressed exactly what I've been thinking 100%!!! Thank you for this rant--it was worth posting!!!

I thought the same thing when I watched that report. Bush has a lot of friends in the oil business. They got him elected so they run the country.

Yeah, everytime one of my co-workers complains (and I know they were a Shrub supporter) I say, "But, gee, you voted for him." It's fun to watch them steam.

You know, the one thought that crosses my mind whenever the gas price goes up more is this: "Gee, there's another oil billionaire." That's what the administration is doing -- creating a wider canyon between the rich and the poor. Pretty soon we'll have a caste system, like India.

I personally think that cheap oil is irresponsible. I'd like to see oil prices stay high enough to make people seriously consider the energy alternatives. Many liberals have been demanding for years that oil prices be raised to fit the world average (in Europe they pay around $7 a gallon for gas and thus have more fuel efficient vehicles and housing) in order to be more environmentally and socially responsible. I find it interesting that liberals are now the ones ranting about the increase in oil prices.

Also, not really related to the above, but this post is very interesting about the actual effect that Katrina has had on oil production in our country: http://www.livejournal.com/users/fearthainn/392536.html

I'm ranting because these increses are totally unjustified and are only to put money in the opckets of oil companies and the people who own them at the expense of everyone else. If the extra profits were going into alternative energy sources or to provde gas and heating fuel for the poor then that would be another matter.

But my point was that if oil prices stay high enough, our economy will demand cheaper energy, and the prices of the alternatives will hopefully start coming down to make them reasonable options.

But, yes, if your rant is about how the timing is opporunistic and sick-hearted, then I've gotta agree. At the same time, I hope oil prices stay high. Even though I'll be fucked this winter with my gas-heated home.

Expensive oil is more responsible in the long-term.

That's it exactly. The only thing is in Europe where they pay twice as much for fuel their minimum wage is twice as high as ours. So as long as they raise the minimum wage here to an actual living wage I'm fine with high gas prices. I think you're right that it will encourage responsible usage.

Heh. Gas prices here are insane right now. They sell gas in liters here, and the price per liter is 1.35 euros. I calculated that Americans pay about 50 (euro) cents per liter for gas. In fact, we've NEVER paid less than about 80 cents/liter for gas. :|

Sorry for randomness. :">

I love you! You've said so much about how I feel regarding that asshat in the Oval Office. I can't believe he continued on w/ his vacation as this devastation unfolded. UGH!

I was listening to the news the other night, apparently this past quarter, Exxon posted a 35% increase in profits. 35%! Sure, some increase in profits is always expected, and encouraged, but that comes about with steady increases in prices, not the gouging that has been allowed by our government. Fucking Shrub. *angryface*

You go, girl. I wonder if all the idiots who pulled that republican lever will have sense enough to remember this come the next election. I wonder who all those poor people in New Orleans will vote for next time out.....

Thank you for ranting. I just don't understand. I was just saying to someone that at least last year when all those hurricanes hit there was some hope. At least the hope that we would get a new government and the tide would turn. Now what do we have? The knowledge that are government is screwing over its people so it could become richer and maintain power. I really do hope that people who voted for the shrub are kicking themselves right now. I can't wait to see what happens next summer when the draft starts. Bush is such an idiot.

Amen... I really can't understand what people thought they'd be gaining when they voted for Bush. Our country is basically for shit right now... And I've heard people try to argue that the gas increase isn't Bush's doing and/or fault and/or have any responsibility linked. UGH. It really irritates me to no end.

Thank you for saying this.
