I guess it's obvious from my work that I have a huge fondness for the cultures of countries all over the world. Tonight on National Geographic (PBS) - The Lost Treasures of Afganistan. It looks as though it will be wonderful. It's about the courageous Afgan people and the treasures they hid at huge risk to themselves from the Taliban.

Do you like movies as well? There was a very good, but very sad movie that appears on cable every so often. I forget the title (yeah I know big help), but it'a sbout an Iranian girl who's mother cuts off her hair & tries to pass her off as a boy.

Yes that's it. Very good, but so, so sad.

My friend Rubina was born in Afghanistan. Her family fled to the US when she was 4. Her grandmother was the head of a girls school - this is the same country that now will not let girls attend school let alone run one. When you look at her family pictures from "back home" before everyone started fighting over the land, people, oil, etc. you wouldn't even know that the pictures weren't taken in the US. It's so sad what has been done for personal profit and power. Rubina is a typical So. CA girl. Talks a little valley-like and is an aspiring actress - she's been in a few commercials. I couldn't even imagine what horrors she would have faced if her family wasn't lucky enough to have the foresight to leave. Must give Rubina extras hugs the next time I see her.
