As a rule I don't usually read Oprah's book picks. I've found that I just don't share her taste. However I'm going to go for this Faulkner thing she's doing. I've only read one of the three books (A Light in August) and I think I'll enjoy it. So I took myself off to the bookstore this morning and bought the set of books. Is anyone else going to read them? If you didn't see the show it's As I Lay Dying in June, The Sound and the Fury in July and A Light in August in August.

In totally unrelated entertainment news I've discovered Entourage on HBO. I've only seen 2 episodes but I like it so far.

I've already read As I Lay Dying and The Sound and the Fury. Somehow I never got around to A Light In August. What was your take on that one? Is it worth adding to my already long summer reading list?

It's a long time since I read it but as I recall I did enjoy it, it's what made me decide to go for the summer reading class thing.

I was really surprised that Oprah chose these books, actually. They're wonderful books, all three of them... :)

When we received the sets on Thursday I didn't think they'd sell. We sold out in two days. Apparently, others decided they liked the Summer of Faulkner idea too.

Happy Reading

The woman can move books, that's for sure. They still had several sets this morning at my local B&N and they were 30% off with my discount card, so it was a good deal for me.

I had to read The Sound and the Fury for a class, and didn't like it much. Interestingly enough, I bought it used on Amazon for a dollar, and it was an edition of both that and As I Lay Dying. If the latter isn't as head-trippy as The Sound and the Fury, let me know :D

If you get a chance (and are so inclined) try out 'The Hamlet' - it's the basis for the 1958 movie 'The Long Hot Summer' with Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward (There was a 1985 made for TV version with Don Johnson as well...) I thought it was a good read...

But I was one of those sickos in high school who read Faulkner for fun!

I loved and adored Sound and the Fury. I enjoy all of Faulkner. It must be the English major geek in me.

I read the Cliff notes first at the suggestion of my professor so that I could pick up the clues as to who is talking since it is done in a stream of consciousness style. It is also very helpful in regards to symbolism throughout the novel.

One of my favorites. Any idea why Oprah chose Faulkner for the summer?

I just ordered the first season on DVD. It's pretty cheap as box sets go, especially with my employee discount.
