Getting pissed off at Oprah for being totally insensitive is not something I generally expect. I was watching her today and she had on this woman who lost a ton of weight. Among other things this woman had her teeth re-done. Tons of crowns, root canals etc. Oprah said to her she was so glad she'd had it done because you see otherwise attractive people and then they open their mouth and she can't understand why they don't have their teeth fixed.

I wanted to throw something at the TV. Guess she isn't aware that a lot of us don't have dental insurance and aren't rich. I lost a tooth (back one, thank God) because I needed a root canal. They wanted $800 up front plus another $600 for a crown. All up front. I don't have that kind of money. Oprah needs a reality check.

I think the really wealthy people, as much good intentions as they may have, simply just forget that life isn't as easy for most people as it is for them. Even those who came from poor backgrounds tend to forget. Money does things to the mind, I think.

I'm in that boat, now...I need to have my wisdom teeth removed and I can't afford what they want. I'm planning to wait until I'm literally sreaming in pain, and then chain myself to the front door and scream until they either go deaf or agree to payments I can actually make. :o/

Thank God mine are out or I'd be right there with you.

I'm sure she'll get a ton of email about that one. Her next big give away will be dental work for all her audience.

hey, i was just watching that too! although i love oprah, she does have a tendency to make unnecessary/rude comments or completely cut people off when they are speaking. you're right, most people can't afford it and maybe it's someone's personal decision to not have their teeth fixed as odd as that sounds. one thing that i liked about jewel was that people talked shit about her teeth but she never ran out to get them fixed. it's kind of rebellious.

The assumption that people choose not to go to the dentist was just annoying. Last time I had my teeth cleaned she told me next time I came in I needed to have a full set of xrays. I haven't been back. I can't afford xrays. I have got to get a job with dental coverage.

I dont work for either entitiy but just to let you know that if you live in New York City, Gouveneur Hospital ( after years of very lame care) has an entire new program [staffed with good doctors and dentists] which offers treatment to those who cant afford it and as an aside, people without citizenship .I think it's a sliding scale but I know people who are quite pleased.

I wish there was something like that here. There are days where dentists donate their work but they don't do anything expensive. If you need a root canal or a crown or whatever they'll just extract.

I never really understood the American fascination with perfect teeth, I know that there is a stereotype that the Brits have bad teeth which is annoying, but I would rather walk down the street here where people don't care what your smile looks like whether good or bad then be in America not being able to afford all the dental surgery and being judged on it - if that makes sense?

There are more important things in life.

I don't like Oprah anyway, but then they stopped showing her here years ago,

It makes perfect sense. I mean, you can't even get a decent job here if you don't have perfect teeth.

I completly get you. I had to fix various cavities I had this year, 'cause, lacking a dental plan, I hadn't been able to go to the dentist in a few years. And I only just did it, 'cause two of my teeth broke. I don't have a perfect smile (small teeth, gaps and too much gums showing when i smile), but I didn't want to loose them.

I had to shell out more than $1,000, maybe $1,500 in cash, thank God, in payments, for a root canal and fixing other cavities.

And I still need the crown and to pull two wisdom teeth, that are pushing against my other teeth.

I knew I stopped watching Oprah for a reason. She's to 'high and mighty' for my tastes.

It's insane. And they don't take payments here.

I found a really good doctor. Great touch and wonderful guy. His wife's the receptionist and they run a really good office. If it weren't for the payments, I would be sans two teeth right now.

But yeah... insane. Dental work really should have lower prices.

I agree.I think she means well, but she's a little too far removed from ordinary folks to fully understand things like this.

It was the same deal with the cars, I bet it never occured to her that soem people wouldn't be able to afford the taxes

Yup. I like her usually but I found that annoying.

Oh man, I'm totally in the same boat, except the problem is in my *front* teeth. Yeah, YIKES. And Canada has a great health system, but it doesn't include dental, and they don't offer insurance where I work. I'm currently trying to save up enough to at least get the major problem taken care of. *sigh*

I think that people don't realize that *anything* like that costs money. I mean, if this woman lost a LOT of weight, enough to be featured on a TV show, then she probably needed that surgery where they tuck the skin and such. :/

Oh yeah, she was having 10 surgeries for that, and a knee replacement plus her teeth. The hospital where she went looked very pricy and the dentists office too. I think she either came from money or Oprah was paying for it. She didn't work so she didn't have health insurance.

I cracked a tooth about two years ago and the cost for the root canal and crown was huge. At the time we had dental insurance, but even so it didn't pay much at all. Fortunately, our dentist will take payments. He doesn't even specify how much per month as long as you pay something. After my husband was unemployed for 6 months last year we lost our insurance and still don't have any with his new job. Let's not even talk about the orthodontist for my son's braces. Does a university near you have a dental school? They might be reasonably priced.

I wrote Oprah an email after todays show...talk about insulted. I'm sorry we don't all have Oprah money so we can chat with Oprah with beautiful straight teeth. My mother has had a bad overbite and a gap in her front teeth all of her life and has a job but even with her coverage it still leaves ALOT to be paid for and she just doesn't have the money and probably never will. It kills me because sometimes I can see how self conscious it is for her and she works out with the public where people say nasty things. I was shocked she even said that.

What gets me about dental work is that, barring the new wave to "whiten your teeth" there has not been any major advancements in dental work. The filling materials have not really changed (can still get higher end white stuff, or the average metal mouth stuff) I can't imagine a dentists' costs have gone up so much to equal what rates have gone up. And don't even get me started on medical professionals who will not accept a payment plan, however meager, and insist on payment up front....so disgusting.
