Here's a real life lesson in what can happen when you under-estimate your worth.

My father works in the heavy construction business. He's kind of a Big Deal. He was asked to mentor a Young Engineer in a Very Big Design Build Firm (herein after referred to as VBDBF.) My father is a consultant to the VBDBF. VBDBF is based in NY with a subsidiary company in (among other places) Miami. Young Engineer has been asked to move to Miami. He doesn't want to. He lives and works in NJ. He asked my father's advice. My father advised him that he should take the position, but if he really doesn't want to he should still take the position but make it contingent on a list of requests that the VBDBF will not want to grant.

My dad got the following e-mail from Young Engineer the other day:

This is the list I gave him:

Same Salary
Moving Exp $15,000
Relocation Bonus $3,000

Relocation
Travel Exp $2,000
Cost to rent Apartment in FL
Loss on rental in NJ
Return move back to NJ

Marketing
Promotion to VP
Car allowance $600/month

Unfortunately he said it all was reasonable!

Whoops!

That's awesome!!! I mean, being an engineer in the consulting industry I totally get 'the list of demands' type deal but it truly is funny that the company conceded to his demands and he still has to go... what a complete opposite of win/win... it's a lose/lose situation! LOL

=D
