I had a book by Dick Francis on my Book Meme. Ever read him? His books are like potato chips, you start reading and you don't stop until you're done. However, that doesn't mean he's some hack writing junk novels.
The great train was standing there, faintly hissing, silver, immensely heavy, stretching away in both directions for as far as one could see in the gloom. ...I'd learned that each carriage (built of strong unpainted corrugated aluminum with the corrugations lying horizontal) was eighty-five feet long; and there were fifteen carriages in all, counting the horses, the baggage and the Lorrimores. With the engines as well, this train covered more than a quarter of a mile standing still.
And that's a description of a physical thing, he's amazing with his descriptions of the small movements and actions that people make that convey a meaning even without words.

He's written a whole bunch of books. So even if you've read them all, you can circle back around and enjoy one you've read before.
Unfortunately, his wife and writing partner (maybe research and editing partner) died about 2 years ago and he hasn't written since.
He said for a long time that when they couldn't work together he'd retire, and apprently he meant it.
