You know what? I think I agree with practically everything you said here (which is a huge surprise, isn't it? :)). I do wish they'd fleshed out Gray a bit more, and got an actor who could, well, act, but you're right - it's about friendship and love and loyalty and so those things, in the grand scheme of things, pale in comparison. I just think that if they'd 1) had a better Gray and 2) closed up all the plotholes, the story would have been all the more powerful. But then again, it was plenty powerful as is, so... yeah. Not gonna argue.
I'm really happy that Ianto survived. I'd heard murmurings (not spoilers, I was spoiler free) that he wouldn't make it, but he did and that made me happy. I do think that it's very disappointing that they didn't set up a reason for Jack to go back to DW - I was expecting one. After all, he doesn't really have a legitimate one at this point, unless the Doctor seeks him out. Which is possible. Hm.
The last bit killed me, with them putting the things away (John has said that they were crying for real, and had to only do one take and no rehearsals, 'cause it was that emotional for them) and the little message from Tosh. It was so... her. Totally perfect.
If I put my nitpicky nature aside, I can honestly say that I loved to hate and hated to love this episode. For what it was, it was incredible. And in time, the nitpicky nature that is my default setting will dissipate and I'll be left with a show that I love. :)
Thanks for this post. And these caps. And if you want to cry again, go to my LJ and watch the vid I found and linked. :D
