quinn222: (Storm)

Well, by some miracle we got our power back late this morning and our phone back just a few minutes ago. FPL is saying it will be weeks before some people get theirs. I guess the combination of being quite close to the hospital and having an FPL guy living down the street works in our favour.

It was not a fun time yesterday. They say it was a strong 2 but it felt a lot worse where we were. Maybe more like a medium 3. The backside was a lot worse than the front and this time we never got the eye. We were just on the northern edge of the eyewall. It was very noisy and my garage door sounded like it might give but it held. The shutters took a few hits and all of our smaller trees were knocked over. 5 Hibiscus, 2 oranges, a lemon, and 2 hollies. We braced them back up and hoping for the best with those. Three large palms are leaning but they should be okay. As soon as the storm passed I got some of the shutters down and got the generator running. The generator itself scares the hell out of me but we had lights and got the fridge on it. Then about 8 it started running out of gas. It was pitch black and my flashlight hardly worked. I'm out there trying to turn it off and it's bucking all over the driveway like something possessed. I was scared to death. I'm so glad I don't have to deal with that again tonight.

No word yet from work. The last I heard our chief engineer had been to the NOC and it was operating on generators. My boss told me not to come in and to wait for a call. We are under a curfew from 7pm to 7am. Let's see, what else...oh, FEMA is back right around the corner hading out roof tarps, MREs and ice. Thank God the weather is cool so people aren't suffering without A/C this time.

I took a really short video out my kitchen window (the only small opening we left in the shutters, it's in a very protected spot and we put two of the three panels on it) and a few snapshots.

short vid here, right click and save.

This was a whole lot scarier looking in motion and with the deafening sound effect. They really do sound like a freight train going through.
