I survived graduation.
The weather was perfect and everything went very smoothly except for one teeny tiny thing. We were told when we arrived where we were to go. Everyone in the sciences was to go to a certain spot where we would be given our name card with a number on it. We were then to locate our division and line up according to the numbers on the cards. Which would put us in alphabetical order.
No problem. I locate the lady with the cards and tell her my name. She hands me my card. It has a number 1 on it. This is something of a surprise because while my name does begin with an 'A' I figured there would be an Adams or something ahead of me at the very least. No. I am #1. In the Advanced Technology Division. Which is #1 in the list of divisions. Which makes me #1. Period. OMG. I had to go first. Thank God there was a professor to follow and even better they did the Arts folks first when they handed out the diplomas.
Also, they told us at rehearsal that after we got our (empty of course) diploma and were walking away from Home Plate (so to speak) we should pause while the photographer took our picture. No problem. They failed to mention we were not to pause. We were to step to the side, stand in front of two flags, hold our diploma in front of us and smile. I am now prepared should I ever be arrested and have to hold up the little number card for my mug shot. I'm promising you right now that that photo will never see the light of day.
I came home, took a nap and then applied to continue my education in the fall. OMG. It's a long haul but my friend Robert and I decided during graduation that we really need PHDs so we can wear the little velvet hats. That should only take me twenty years or so at the rate I am going.
